There are only four majors each year for the men and five for the women, and some properties have hosted both for these career-defining moments. Erin Hills, masterfully shaped in the Kettle Moraine region of Wisconsin by a retreating glacier 10,000 years ago, hosted the men’s U.S. Open in 2017, where Brooks Koepka won his first of five major titles. At this year’s U.S. Women’s Open, another first-time major champion, Sweden’s Maja Stark, was crowned in The Badger State.

Later this summer, the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship will be held at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas, at the headquarters of the PGA of America. With Panther Creek winding through the landscape, this strategic test designed by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner places a premium on accurate approaches into smaller greens. The men will play their first PGA Championship here in 2027, with another scheduled down the line in 2034. Observing how the world’s best golfers shape their shots around this layout will be a treat.
While we wait, let’s recall memorable moments from these seven properties that have hosted both a men’s and women’s major between 2014 and 2024.
Baltusrol Golf Club—Springfield, N.J.
PGA Championship: 2016
KPMG Women’s PGA Championship: 2023
Baltusrol was founded in 1895 by Louis Keller, on grounds that were once a farm that belonged to Baltus Roll before, sadly, he was murdered. Having hosted 19 men’s and women’s championships, dating back to the U.S. Women’s Amateur in 1901, it is an understatement to say that Baltusrol’s grounds have been a stage for dramatic history. In 2016, Jimmy Walker won his only major, with a score of 14-under on the Lower course, designed by Rees Jones. Going wire-to-wire, he held at least a share of the lead after every round. Walker’s triumph also meant that each of the four men’s majors in 2016 was won by a first-time major champion (Masters—Danny Willet; U.S. Open—Dustin Johnson; Open Championship—Henrik Stenson). In 2021, the club completed a restoration of the Lower course led by Gil Hanse, with an eye to A.W. Tillinghast’s original vision. In 2023, Ruoning Yin of China won her only major on the same course with a score of 8-under, propelling her to World No. 1 later that year. The men will next visit for the PGA Championship in 2029.

Pinehurst (No. 2)—Pinehurst, N.C.
U.S. Open: 2014 and 2024
U.S. Women’s Open: 2014
Germany’s Martin Kaymer took the first-round lead and never let go, winning the 2014 U.S. Open by a dominating eight strokes at 9-under-par over American runners-up Erik Compton and Rickie Fowler. Over four days on Pinehurst’s infamous greens, he needed only 110 putts. Playing just a week later—think about all the benefits for visiting fans, at-home viewers, and production crews regarding course familiarity and complementary footage—Michelle Wie confidently captured her lone major title with a two-stroke margin and a final score of 2-under. In 2024, Bryson DeChambeau topped Rory McIlroy at Pinehurst to lift his second U.S. Open trophy after his first major victory at Winged Foot in 2020. In 2029, the dual U.S. Opens return to Pinehurst.

Pebble Beach Golf Links—Pebble Beach, Calif.
U.S. Open: 2019
U.S. Women’s Open: 2023
Who can forget Tom Kite’s chip-in on Pebble Beach’s iconic par-three 7th in the blustery winds during the final round of his 1992 U.S. Open victory? Gary Woodland made par during all four rounds on No. 7 en route to his only major title in 2019, and Allisen Corpuz tallied one bogey, two pars, and one birdie during her U.S. Women’s Open victory in 2023 to the same net effect, playing the 7th at even par. Woodland beat the field by three strokes with rounds of 68–65–69–69. Corpuz’s first major title was also her first LPGA tour win, as she finished three strokes ahead of the field. Between now and 2048, six United States Open Championships will be contested at Pebble Beach—three apiece.

Old Course at St. Andrews—St. Andrews, Scotland
Open Championship: 2015 and 2022
AIG Women’s Open: 2024
Having won both the Masters and the U.S. Open in 2015, Jordan Spieth was attempting to win his third straight major when the 144th Open was played at St. Andrews that July. Spieth missed the four-hole playoff by a stroke, with Zach Johnson eventually defeating Marc Leishman and 2010 Champion Golfer Louis Oosthuizen. In 2022, Cam Smith, shooting a clinical final round 64, became the fifth and most recent Australian to win the Open Championship with a total score of 20-under-par. The 48th AIG Women’s Open, the third to be played at St. Andrews, is where New Zealand’s Lydia Ko earned her third major title by two strokes. Earlier that summer, Ko recorded another remarkable feat when she qualified for the LPGA Hall of Fame by winning Gold at the Paris Olympics. The men return in 2027 to St. Andrews for the 31st time at the 155th Open Championship.

Royal Troon Golf Club—Troon, Scotland
Open Championship: 2016 and 2024
AIG Women’s Open: 2020
Along the Firth of Clyde, Sweden’s Henrik Stenson rose to the occasion with rounds of 68, 65, 68, and a blistering final round 63 to raise the Claret Jug in 2016, carding 20-under-par. He battled Phil Mickelson, who finished three strokes back. In 2024, Xander Schauffele, playing through wind and rain throughout the event, won by two after a bogey-free final round of 65. It was Schauffele’s second career major victory, and second that year, after winning the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla in Kentucky. Equally if not more inspiring was Sophia Popov’s 7-under winning score in 2020, because entering the week she was ranked 304th in the world. Popov’s joyful post-victory interview in front of a gorgeous wall of pink, white, and purple flowers is worth watching for anyone seeking encouragement to persevere through golf’s tough swings. For the men or the women, the Open can’t return here soon enough, but the schedule hasn’t revealed it so to this point.

Royal Birkdale Golf Club—Southport, England
Open Championship: 2017
AIG Women’s Open: 2014
In 2014, Mo Martin won with an eagle on the final hole, one shot clear of competitors Shanshan Feng and Suzann Pettersen, despite a moving day round of 5-over. This was the sixth women’s British open hosted by Royal Birkdale, and they have hosted the men 10 times since 1954. Significantly, Royal Birkdale was the first course on the men’s Championship rota to be added to the women’s. In 2017, Jordan Spieth won his third major here, making a heroic effort on No. 13 after hitting onto a large dune, taking a drop on the practice range, and getting up-and-down for bogey. He proceeded to score birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie, par to finish the round and defeat Matt Kuchar by three strokes. The men return to Royal Birkdale and its penal bunkers and strategic dunes in 2026.

Carnoustie Golf Links—Carnoustie, Scotland
Open Championship: 2018
AIG Women’s Open: 2021
Due to a Scottish heatwave, Carnoustie had become so dry and fast in 2018 that several drives were clearing 400 yards. Paired with Tiger Woods on Sunday, Francesco Molinari finished on top of the 156-man field on this par-71 layout, earning his first major title. In 2021, Anna Nordqvist won with a score of 12-under on the same course after beating 143 players for her third major title. At that time, the purse was the largest ever for a woman’s major championship. The players learned that Barry Burn, flowing through Carnoustie, has a formidable presence and with holes named “Gulley,” “Hillocks,” and “Railway,” the challenges are mighty. Like with Royal Birkdale, it has not yet been decided when either Open is returning here.
