This is not your average golf community. Yes, it has an award-winning golf course, even an equestrian center and spectacular beach. But what’s notable is what it doesn’t have: cars. Located on Daufuskie Island, Haig Point is accessible only by ferry from Hilton Head, and that ferry doesn’t take automobiles. Once on the island, transport is by golf cart, which gives the property a peaceful, exclusive feel that is a big part of its appeal.
Relaxed as it is, there’s a lot going on. New high-speed internet lines are going in and the clubhouse is being renovated. “We have remodeled the grill room with new everything,” says General Manager/CEO Doug Egly. “The ladies’ locker room has been totally remodeled, as well.” The main ballroom and boardroom will be redone soon.
The golf, widely acknowledged as one of Rees Jones’s best, splits at numerous points to offer different greens and tees that lessen forced carries and make the game more enjoyable for higher handicaps. For better players, the back tees provide all the challenge—and coastal views—anyone could want. The nine-hole Osprey course is a great option for families. Homesites range from just under $100,000 to $450,000; homes from $599,000 to $2 million. “We have nine homes under construction and another four under permitting,” says Egly. “Things are going well at Haig.”
I was there in last season and the experience was mind blowing.
