An innovative women’s golf program is enhancing this premier private golf community’s sense of camaraderie and connection
Tucked away in scenic Bluffton, S.C., on the banks of the Okatie River, Berkeley Hall Club offers much more than luxurious homes and stunning courses: It offers a true sense of belonging. Central to that feeling is the women’s golf group known affectionately as HAGGs (Hits & Giggles Girls). Far from your typical member-run golf group, HAGGs has transformed the Berkeley Hall experience for countless women. Alongside HAGGs, Berkeley Hall offers a variety of other women’s golf opportunities, some organized by members and some run by the Club.
Back in 2022, four women whose husbands were avid golfers decided they wanted in on the fun, even though they had little golf experience. “Our husbands were big golfers, but most of us had never golfed,” recalls Carol Garanich, one of the founding members and the current HAGG Commissioner. After some introductory lessons, they launched their casual Thursday scramble, keeping it simple and enjoyable. “We don’t keep score,” Garanich laughs. “And we never dreamed retirement could be so much fun.”

That small initiative quickly evolved into one of Berkeley Hall’s most celebrated programs with nearly 80 participants. HAGGs attracts beginners, especially newcomers who find comfort in a relaxed, supportive atmosphere. Stephanie George, Berkeley Hall’s Head Golf Professional, is in full support. “For ladies with no handicap, this was a niche that needed to be filled.” It’s a sentiment echoed by HAGG Board Member Lisa Feeney: “We teach golf course etiquette, and we have an ambassador who plays with new players. We love the game, we’re all getting better, and we have a great time.”
The success of HAGGs isn’t just measured by improved golf swings—it’s evident in how quickly new members feel integrated into the community. Berkeley Hall’s Director of Marketing, Alex Madeiros, sees this firsthand.
“The HAGGs program has had an incredible impact on prospective buyers and new members,” he says. “It creates an immediate sense of belonging for women, especially those who may have initially felt they were joining for their spouse’s golf experience. The welcoming, inclusive nature breaks down barriers and shows how vibrant and connected our women’s golf community truly is. Time and again, we hear from new members that HAGGs made them feel right at home from day one.”
At Berkeley Hall Club, it’s clear that connection and community are just as important as pristine fairways and elegant homes. And thanks to HAGGs, the spirit of camaraderie thrives more than ever.
