This week’s WGC-Bridgestone and next week’s PGA Championship are two pivotal weeks in the PGA Tour schedule. For Adam Scott, they might be the two most important weeks of his entire season.
The PGA Championship ends on August 13, and Scott’s wife Marie is due to give birth to their second child on the 19th. As a result, Scott is planning on skipping the first two playoff events, The Northern Trust, Aug. 24-27, and Dell Technologies Championship, Sept. 1-4, to be home in the Bahamas with his family.
That would mean that Scott would return to action at the BMW Championship, the third playoff event. Scott currently sits 70th in the FedEx Cup standings and the top 70 in the standings after the Dell Technologies Championship qualify for the third playoff event. That means that Scott will need strong performances this week and next week to assure his spot in the field.
“I need to play exceptionally well the next couple weeks to make it beyond, well, make it to the BMW, anyway,” Scott told reporters Wednesday. “I need to really jump a lot. But it’s one of those things that happens in life, and if it turns out to be a forced break then you’ve got to take advantage of that. It’s all good things that are happening.”
Scott has had some success at Firestone Country Club, host of the WGC-Bridgestone. He won the event in 2011 and has recorded a pair of top-10 finishes here since 2014.
