Most of the drivers today have a footprint that seems bigger than Shaquille O’Neal’s. They’re so huge that it’s difficult to imagine doing anything with the ball other than clobbering it, and for most, that’s fine.
But if you want to have a little more confidence when it comes to shaping the ball, the mid-launch, low-spin 909D3 is a great choice. At 440cc, the D3 is Titleist's first sub-460cc head since the introduction of the 400cc 905T and 905S in March 2005. The traditional pear-shaped head also features a smaller, deeper face that helps to control trajectory and work it left or right.
But don’t get the idea this is some persimmon throwback. There’s a lot of technology hidden beneath its classic looks. An internally milled face insert maximizes ball speed across the face, which is ½ degree open, while a rib inside the sole helps reduce vibration and provide superior feel and sound.
The real proof was in the pudding, or rather, the pounding, however: The launch numbers were near perfect. Available in three lofts, 8.5-10.5 degrees.
