Not satisfied with existing materials, Callaway metallurgists created an alloy
called Tunite for the FT irons. Using Tunite in the frame allowed the company to
move 80 percent of the clubhead’s weight to the perimeter to increase
forgiveness and ball speed on off-center hits off the titanium face.
Despite
all this technology, the cosmetics of the FT at address are classic, with
minimal offset, high toe and thin top line. In fact, one tester commented that
the long, lean look brought to mind Callaway’s fabled S2H2 irons, which date
from 1988.
As expected, the FT performed well—extremely forgiving with high,
straight shots. The big surprise was the feel. “The ball comes off with a
satisfying click, solid but soft at the same time,” says a 14. “You could
practice all day with it.”
